Carbon and climate

On this theme, it is interesting to read Hawken et al.’s views on climate change, written before the issue really rose in the public consciousness. The reader gets a sense of the fragility and thinness of the earth’s atmosphere in relation to its mass, and learns that carbon dioxide makes up only 0.03 percent of the atmosphere, yet only tiny changes in its amount can have significant warming effects.

Unlike most environmentalists, the authors acknowledge the power of markets to avert a climate change catastrophe. Rather than heavy-handed regulation, they support carbon trading among corporations to reduce emissions, and note optimistically:
